Köln Comedy Festival – a german festival became one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world.
How could that happen ?
Believe it or not – Germany is a nation of comedy addicts. But nearly 20 years ago there where not to many young comedians in Germany, so we started in 1991 as a comedy import festival. We invited comedians from all around the world to show their act here in Cologne.


Meanwhile, after 16 years, the Köln Comedy Festival is an internationally known event. With more than 35,000 tickets sold in 2006, the annual festival broke all attendance records and established itself as one of the biggest european comedy festival. Our visitors attended within 17 days more than 120 liveshows performed by over 200 comedians in 22 venues – another record. More than 2.000 comedians from all over the world were invited to the festival since 1991.


Beside presenting many liveshows, there are additional highlights to support the still growing comedy scene in Germany.


During the festival we award the best comedy of the year in “the german comedy award”. Our tv-show , broadcasted on RTL television, reaches more than 6,0 millions viewers or 24 % market share.
We present eleven categories as “best live act” , “start up comedian of the year”, “best tv show”, “best tv sitcom” etc..


This year we will add another highlight to the festival, the International Köln Comedy Film Festival: Comedy Cinema.


Our objective is to join forces and bring our experience and competence together to establish a popular international Comedy Film Festival. Internationally as well as nationally there are a very large number of film festivals - but only very few are exclusively concerned with Comedy, although comedy is increasingly becoming the genre to determine most programmes. Köln Comedy is and has been a pioneer for developing comedy in Germany, which meanwhile is an important share of tv- und entertainment industry in Germany.


Comedy Cinema - International Köln Comedy Film Festival will take place from 18 to 21 October 2007 in various cinemas all over Cologne.


We will provide international comedies with a platform and a market beyond national borders. Almost all German comedians of the younger generation have started their carriers at the Cologne Comedy Festival. National as well as international comedians are recognising the Köln Comedy Festival as an innovative partner.

Under the curatee of Myriam Alexowitz the experienced festival team assembles an international collection of nationally successful comedy films in original versions or with english subtitles.

Seven of these films are in the competition for the “german comedy award” in the category “best foreign comedy film”, the others will we featured as “special presentation”. Additionally there will be a presentation of documentaries that deal with the comedy industry and comedians.

Our films are invited from all around the world. We want to show consonance and differences in national humour, support the compliment of entertaining films and roll out a red carpet for dedicated filmmakers, actors and comedians. The festival audience of Köln Comedy Festival will welcome them and appreciate their work. And the winner will take home a statue that says ““best foreign comedy film in Germany 2007”.
